COMMERCIAL PARTNERSHIP
Founder, author, teacher and consultant clinical psychologist, Dr Cheryl Rezek explains her problem-solving range of products for sensitive, damaged or difficult skin.
When we recognise that we are mind and body, and not mind or body, we come to understand how one part of us can influence another. If we see skin conditions as entirely separate from how we feel emotionally, or something detached from the impact of the food we eat or the products we put on our skin, then we develop a very narrow view. This is why both psychological and physical conditions tend to be treated in isolation rather than more systemically or dynamically.
In my clinical work, I observe how health issues affect psychological wellness and social engagement. Allergies, for example, can range from life-threatening to highly uncomfortable and can have a profound impact on a person’s life and those around them. While many skincare products (including body washes, baby shampoos, laundry detergents, etc.) claim to be for sensitive skin or hypoallergenic, this only indicates fewer allergens, not an absence of them, leaving the outcome to chance. Not only is this financially costly, but it can be a risk to someone’s health or wellness. This places all the responsibility on the consumer to read every ingredient (in tiny print) and understand words that are mostly incomprehensible. Preservatives, parabens, phthalates, paraffin, fragrances, and so much more are used in virtually all items we use daily, including those for babies and adolescents. Some ingredients damage the skin; others actively damage your health.
The more I learned about what is in products, their unwanted effects and how they are marketed, the more concerned I became. I narrowed my efforts and chose to address a gap in skincare for those with eczema-prone skin, psoriasis, acne, menopausal skin, itchy, dry, and compromised skin in adults, babies, and adolescents.
While consumer demand is driving change, it is essential that individuals increase their knowledge of harsh or harmful ingredients and actively choose safer products. If the switch seems like too much effort, then ask yourself, ‘Why am I putting petrol and hormone disruptors on my skin, toxins on my baby’s skin and damaging skin irritants on my adolescent’s acne?’. What is put on the skin either helps to protect it and you, or it damages your skin barrier or is absorbed and damages your health.
The Life Happens Skin Rescue range excludes all known skin irritants and allergens (allergen-free products require testing against UK or EU standards). Its goal is to deliver effective, soothing, multi-functional, natural products that are gentle on the skin and work with it, minimising the risk of reactions or further damage. It helps to restore and renew damaged skin barriers without toxic elements and provide high quality products that are sustainable and safe. The range has already received 9 European Free From Skincare Awards, including Innovation and Best Brand, and 2 Universal Beauty Awards, one being an Editor’s Gold for the Acne duo. So, dump the junk and read the back of the label, not the eye-catching front part.
